Welcome to my article archive. I've collected here various articles and reviews I've written, most of which have been previously published elsewhere.
Baleful Head
Baleful Head was a magazine I published in 1997. Intended to present long reviews of fantasy books, films, games, and other related items, it lasted only a single issue.
Baleful Head #1 was a Wizard of Oz special, and featured a number of articles on the subject, as well as some other articles and reviews. Garen wrote a number of articles, and provided most of the design and publishing know-how, as well as the logo.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
The End of All Songs — the music of Michael Moorcock
And many a mystic lay of life and death — review of Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King
Tea & Fantasy — review of Humphrey Carpenter's The Inklings
Hard Day's Nightmare — review of Richard Marsh's The Beetle
I, Bastard — review of Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice
The name, Baleful Head, comes from one of my favourtie paintings by Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood artist Edward Burne-Jones. Here's a short article about him that I wrote for inclusion in a future issue:

Cybernet 2000
Between 1997 and 1998 I wrote articles and reviews for Cybernet2000, a monthly "magazine" published in the then-new (to me, anyway) World-Wide Web!
Most of the reviews I did were for things I'd never have read otherwise — Star Wars juvenile novels, Babylon 5 cookbooks, Star Trek quiz books, pulpy techo-thrillers and so on.
Towards the end I wrote a few articles on some writers and series such as Tarzan, Conan and H P Lovecraft, but by then the pressure of work (and my own projects) meant I couldn't give it any more time.
Here's a few of the things I did for Cybernet2000. (They also reprinted most of my Baleful Head articles.)
Tarzan the Invincible!
Star Wars — a myth that refuses to die
King of the Barbarians
